How to Recognize a Suspicious Text Message

Learn the common warning signs of scam texts and the safest way to respond.

Scam messages often try to create fear, urgency, or curiosity. They may claim that a package is delayed, an account is locked, a bill is unpaid, or a family member needs money.

Common warning signs

  • The message pressures you to act immediately.
  • It asks for a password, verification code, gift card, or payment.
  • The web address looks unusual or misspelled.
  • The message comes from an unfamiliar number.
  • The wording does not sound like the person or organization it claims to represent.

What to do

  1. Do not select the link.
  2. Do not reply.
  3. Open the company’s official app or website separately.
  4. Call the person or organization using a number you already trust.
  5. Block and report the message when possible.

Legitimate organizations do not normally ask for passwords or one-time verification codes by text. When in doubt, pause and verify through a separate, trusted method.
